Beloved Sci-Fi Store Returns to Bristol
Forbidden Planet, a much-loved science fiction shop in Clifton Heights, Bristol, has reopened its doors on December 7, 2024, exactly a year after a devastating fire forced its closure.
The fire originated in the building above the store in December 2023, leaving the shop’s inventory ruined by smoke, water, and firefighting chemicals.
A New Chapter for Forbidden Planet
Andrew Sumner, Chief Operating Officer of Forbidden Planet, expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from fans:
“The response we’ve received about the store’s reopening has been incredibly touching, and we deeply appreciate it.”
The store has completely restocked after the previous inventory was lost and marked its grand reopening with a special celebration. The event featured cosplayers, goodie bags, and author signings, creating a festive atmosphere.
Fan Devotion on Display
The reopening event saw an impressive turnout, with one fan, Matthew, braving stormy weather and queuing outside from 8:00 a.m. GMT.
Sumner noted, “Forbidden Planet isn’t just a store – it’s a way of life for many. It’s how fans connect with the worlds and stories they love.”
A Legacy of Creativity in Bristol
The store, a cornerstone of Bristol’s creative community, has been operating for 31 years. Originally opened on Penn Street in Broadmead in 1993, it moved to its current Clifton Heights location in 2005.
Sumner praised Bristol as a hub of creativity, calling it “a forward-thinking city, full of inspiration.”
Recovering From a Serious Incident
The fire caused extensive damage to the upper floors of the building, but the store’s structural integrity remained intact. Most of the losses were due to smoke and water damage rather than the fire itself.
Upcoming Events at Forbidden Planet
To continue the celebrations, the shop has scheduled various events throughout December. Highlights include a special book signing for Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl on December 22.
