USDA freezes Maine funding as it questions the University of Maine’s compliance with Trump’s order on transgender athletes in sports.
Trump vs. USDA freezes Maine funding
The funding freeze comes after Maine Gov. Janet Mills publicly clashed with Trump at the National Governors Association meeting on Feb. 21. When Trump warned that schools allowing trans athletes could lose funding, Mills fired back:
“We’ll see you in court.”
The next day, the USDA launched a compliance review into the University of Maine, accusing the school of disregarding federal mandates.
What’s at Stake?
The University of Maine system received about $30 million in USDA funding in fiscal year 2024. The frozen grants support:
- Agricultural research into farm contamination
- Youth programs and education
- Support for fishermen and foresters
The funding halt also aligns with a separate Trump administration decision to cut $400 million in federal grants and contracts to Columbia University, which has faced Republican scrutiny over campus protests related to the Israel-Hamas war.
What Happens Next?
With funding paused, University of Maine officials warn of serious disruptions to research and community programs. The USDA has not provided a timeline for when—or if—the funds will be restored.
