SpaceX launches final World View Legion sats.

SpaceX successfully launched the last two World View Legion satellites for Maxar Intelligence. The launch took place from Kennedy Space Center’s Launch Complex 39A on February 4, 2025. These satellites will enhance Maxar Technologies’ Earth imaging capabilities.

Successful Falcon 9 Mission

The Falcon 9 rocket lifted off at 6:13 p.m. EST. Thick fog covered the launch site, but the rocket ascended smoothly. The mission, called Maxar 3, marked SpaceX’s second Falcon 9 launch of the day.

A reusable Falcon 9 first-stage booster (B1086) powered the launch. It had previously flown on a Falcon Heavy mission and two Starlink missions. After liftoff, the booster landed safely at Landing Zone 1 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. This landing became the 48th successful recovery at LZ-1 and SpaceX’s 405th booster landing overall.

Deployment of the Satellites

The first WorldView Legion satellite was deployed 47 minutes after launch. The second satellite separated nearly two hours into the flight. The Falcon 9’s upper stage performed multiple burns to ensure accurate placement in a mid-inclination Earth orbit (MEO).

More Eyes in the Sky

These two satellites complete the first block of WorldView Legion satellites. They join four others already in orbit. Maxar Intelligence now operates six WorldView Legion satellites, along with six in Sun-synchronous orbit.

The satellites were built by Maxar Space Systems in Palo Alto, California. They were transported to Florida in early January for final preparations.

Enhanced Earth Imaging Capabilities

The WorldView Legion constellation offers 30 cm-class resolution imagery. This high-resolution capacity allows Maxar to provide precise satellite images. The company’s satellites can now collect 3.6 million square kilometers of high-quality images daily.

Maxar’s imagery is available through its Maxar Geospatial Platform (MGP) Pro.Users can now receive a continuous Earth view with the Vivid Advanced Basemap service.

Looking Ahead: With this launch, Maxar Intelligence firmly establishes its position in the commercial satellite imaging market. These satellites will be useful for mapping, environmental monitoring, and defense. The success of the deployment improves SpaceX’s reputation as a reliable launch provider.
