Retailers See a Holiday Rush as Shoppers Scramble for Gifts

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – With Christmas just around the corner, Metro Detroit retailers are seeing a surge of last-minute shoppers looking to wrap up their holiday gift lists.

Many local small businesses and major retailers are keeping their doors open on Christmas Eve, giving procrastinators a final chance to grab those perfect presents.

Gift Cards: The Go-To Last-Minute Gift

At Meijer in Southfield, early riser Heidi Hendricks was on a mission to pick up quick and easy gifts for her coworkers.

“Just some gift cards—it’s easy, and everybody likes them,” Hendricks shared. “I’m heading straight to the gift cards, then straight to the packaging, and I’m done.”

Metro Detroit Small Businesses Benefit from Holiday Rush

Over in Royal Oak, the holiday hustle has been a major boost for small businesses like Write Impressions, a popular stationery shop on Washington Avenue.

Shopper Lindsy Partridge stopped by to pick up last-minute stocking stuffers, saying:
“We already have the big presents, and now it’s just the finishing touches.”

For store owner Lori London, the final shopping rush has been a whirlwind.

“It’s been crazy. The last few days have been totally bonkers,” London said.

Write Impressions is celebrating 35 years of spreading holiday cheer in the community, and London believes this season has been the busiest Christmas since the pandemic.

“I think this is the best Christmas since COVID,” she added.

Stores Closing Early—Check Before You Head Out

If you still need to check off items on your holiday shopping list, it’s a good idea to call ahead and confirm store hours. Many businesses are closing early on Christmas Eve, so time is of the essence!
