NY-to-India Flight Diverted

NY-to-India Flight Diverted to Rome Over Suspected Bomb Threat, Later Found Non-Credible. Flight 292 from NY to New Delhi underwent thorough security checks upon landing.

Security checks were conducted by officials at Leonardo da Vinci Rome Fiumicino Airport. The plane, carrying 199 passengers and 15 crew members, was inspected after a request from the airline. The threat was lifted after 9:00 p.m. local time, the airport confirmed.

“NY-to-India Flight Diverted issue was determined to be non-credible,” American Airlines stated. An inspection was required by Indira Gandhi International Airport protocol. The flight was grounded in Rome overnight for crew rest, the airline added.

Passengers cleared for Europe were taken to nearby hotels, the airport said. Others were moved to designated lounges. Two fighter jets were flown over the airport before landing, per the Associated Press. Law enforcement and fire personnel were positioned on the tarmac afterward.

“Safety and security are prioritized above all,” American Airlines noted. “Customers’ understanding is appreciated greatly.”
