Canned Tuna Recall: Tri-Union Issues Nationwide Warning

Canned Tuna Recall Affects Major Retailers

Tri-Union Seafoods has announced a voluntary recall of select canned tuna products due to a manufacturing defect in the cans’ easy-open lids, which could lead to contamination risks. The recall includes products sold under the Genova, Van Camp’s, H-E-B, and Trader Joe’s brands. These items were distributed across major retailers, including Costco, Walmart, Kroger, Publix, and Trader Joe’s.

According to the company’s press release, the defect may compromise the product’s seal, potentially leading to leakage or bacterial contamination, including Clostridium botulinum, which can cause foodborne botulism—a severe and potentially fatal illness.

Costco Canned Tuna Recall & Other Affected Brands

The Costco canned tuna recall applies to Genova seven-ounce cans, which were distributed in Florida and Georgia. Additionally, Genova five-ounce cans were sold at Harris Teeter, Publix, H-E-B, Kroger, Safeway, Walmart, and other independent retailers in 10 states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, and Florida.

Tri-Union Seafoods has provided specific Best By dates and UPC numbers for the recalled products in its official recall notice.

Health Risks: What You Need to Know

According to the U.S. World Health Organization, Clostridium botulinum thrives in improperly sealed food products, producing dangerous toxins. Symptoms of foodborne botulism can include:

  • Fatigue & Weakness
  • Vertigo & Blurred Vision
  • Dry Mouth
  • Difficulty Swallowing & Speaking

Consumers are strongly advised not to consume any of the recalled canned tuna, even if it appears fresh and unspoiled.

What to Do If You Have Recalled Canned Tuna

Tri-Union Seafoods urges customers to return the affected products to the store for a full refund or dispose of them immediately. Consumers can also contact the company for a retrieval kit and receive a coupon for a replacement product.

“This recall does not impact any other Tri-Union Seafoods products,” the company confirmed, emphasizing its commitment to food safety.
